Sustainability, on principle
Messe Erfurt's long-standing involvement in regional environmental projects and the planned
international Green Globe certification scheme bring the assurance that resource efficiency
is a key factor in the hosting of trade fairs, conferences, concerts and events – not least
because all electricity used is 100% green energy.
On the basis of its voluntary efforts, particularly the implementation of environmental measures within the ÖKOPROFIT framework, Messe Erfurt has for the second time signed up to the Thuringia Sustainability Accord (NAT) until 2015. Alongside climate protection NAT focusses on the community and social element of sustainability. NAT reports in various ways on companies' activities and presents its findings to the political and economic sectors and the wider public. In 2013 Messe Erfurt participated in a touring exhibition which presented the topic of sustainability in public places such as schools and educational institutions across Thuringia.
Messe Erfurt has been awarded ÖKOPROFIT's sustainability certificate five times since 2001 and has been a permanent member of ÖKOPROFIT since 2009. The ECOlogical PROject For Integrated environmental Technology (ECOPROFIT) is a programme to strengthen businesses economically through preventive environmental protection. ÖKOPROFIT combines ecological benefits with economic gain and social justice and thus brings about improvements in all three areas. Its principle focus is on the reduction of energy, water and raw materials consumption and the prevention of environmentally harmful
emissions and waste.
Messe Erfurt actively supports the "Fairpflichtet" sustainability code of the German-speaking event industry and respects its guidelines of corporate responsibility for sustainability when organising and running events. "Fairpflichtet" is an initiative by the European Association of Events Centres (EVVC) and the German Convention Bureau (GCB).
2014 Messe Erfurt GmbH was certificated with with the international sustainability certificate internationalen "Green Globe" for the first time. The approximately 300 criteria were reached with an outstanding result of 93%. Dr. Peter Zimmer, Green Globe auditor for Germany, Austria, East and South Europe, presented CEO Wieland Kniffka with the coveted certificate on August 5th 2014.
